Local SEO for medical clinics

Local SEO for Medical Clinics That Puts Your Practice in the Three-Clinic Map Pack

Search for care near you, and Google puts three clinics on a map before it ever shows a single website. We build out your Google Business Profile, match your listings across the healthcare directories, and earn the recent reviews that keep you in that map pack, because it takes most of a clinic's calls.

What Does Local SEO for Doctors Actually Involve?

Local SEO is the Google Business Profile, the three-clinic map pack it competes for, and the listings and reviews that feed it. Google fills the pack on relevance, distance, and prominence.

We build the profile out completely: categories, services, insurance and hours, one listing per provider, and matching entries on Healthgrades, Vitals, Zocdoc, and WebMD. That work put the Asymmetric Health profile at the top of the Olympia map pack for TRT and BHRT searches, in a city where it has no office.

Reviews are requested and answered in a way that never names a condition. Inquiries are counted by date and source. Priced by scope, locations, and how contested your market is. A written quote follows the free report.

Local SEO for doctors, defined plainly

What Is Local SEO for Doctors?

Local SEO for doctors (local search engine optimization for a medical practice) is the work of improving a clinic's Google Business Profile, matching its name, address, and phone number across the healthcare directories, and earning recent reviews, so the clinic ranks higher in the map pack when a nearby patient searches for care. The payoff is calls and appointment requests from patients who were already looking close to your door.

A typical search it wins is “primary care doctor Charlotte”, typed about 1,000 times a month, and nearly every search like it shows a map before it shows a website. Owners also call it healthcare local SEO, local SEO for medical practices, or Google Business Profile management. It is the same work.

Local SEO and the map pack for medical clinics

The Three-Clinic Map Pack, and Why Hospital Systems Usually Hold It

Search for a doctor, an urgent care, or a treatment with a city after it, and Google puts a map at the top of the page with three clinics pinned on it. Each pin shows a name, a rating, whether it's open, and a call button, and most patients never scroll past it. Increasingly, an AI Overview sits above that map too, naming clinics before a single pin loads.

Google fills those three spots on relevance (how well the profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher), and prominence (reviews, matching listings, and links). Nothing in that formula favors a hospital; health systems hold the pack because they've built all three out at every location for years, and you catch up one neighborhood at a time.

Relevance: What the Profile Says You Treat

Google matches the search to your primary category, your additional categories, and the services listed on the profile. A profile listed only as Medical clinic cannot show for a TRT or weight loss search. One built out for what you actually offer can.

Distance: Where the Searcher Is Standing

You cannot move the building, and you do not need to. Distance is measured from the searcher, so the job is to be the most complete profile inside your own drive radius, then hold the towns next door with pages written for them.

Prominence: Reviews, Listings, and Links

Recent reviews, matching listings on Healthgrades, Vitals, Zocdoc, and WebMD, and links from local sites all count. It is the factor an independent clinic can build fastest, with steady, unglamorous work.

Local SEO for medical practices: the demand

The Searches Where the Map Pack Decides Who Gets the Call

Each row below is a real monthly search count for one city, and each one returns a map pack above the organic results. That map is where the call button is.

Monthly patient searches by city and the clinic type each one books
Patient search Monthly searches Clinic type it books
urgent care Phoenix 2,900 Urgent care
primary care doctor Tampa 1,300 Primary care
primary care doctor Charlotte 1,000 Primary care
weight loss clinic Miami 720 Weight loss / GLP-1
walk in clinic Atlanta 260 Walk-in clinic

Owners are catching on: searches for “Google Business Profile for doctors” grew 91% year over year. Patients never type “local SEO”, though. They type one of the rows above, from a phone, and call whoever Google put on the map. Your own market's rows come with the free SEO report.

What Local SEO for a Medical Clinic Looks Like in the Live Results

This is a TRT clinic search from Lacey, WA, the home market of Asymmetric Health, captured in July 2026, two months into the program. The clinic's website is top-ranked organically, and its 5.0-star profile shows in the local results on the same page. The patient sees the clinic twice before scrolling once.

In Olympia, the larger city next door where the clinic has no office, the same profile sits at the top of the map pack for TRT and BHRT searches, ahead of clinics located in Olympia. That is what a complete profile plus a real Olympia page does about distance.

Local SEO: the Google Business Profile for doctors

How We Build a Clinic's Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile takes more patient calls than anything else you own, and it's usually the least finished. It was probably claimed years ago by whoever set up the phones, the category still says Medical clinic, and nobody's answering the reviews. Building it out properly is month one of the program.

Primary and Secondary Categories

Google matches a search to your primary category first, then to the additional categories you add. We set the primary to the thing you most want to be found for (Family practice physician, Urgent care center, Weight loss service) and add a secondary for each real service line, so the profile becomes eligible for searches it was invisible to before.

The Service Catalog and Business Description

Under each category, Google lets you list services, with a description and a price where you publish one. We write that catalog to mirror your treatment pages, so a specific search matches the profile and the site at once. The description gets one plain paragraph: who you are, the clinicians, the towns you serve, and no claims about results.

Insurance, Hours, and the Attributes Patients Filter On

Insurance information, telehealth, wheelchair access, new-patient status, and exact hours all live in attributes that patients filter on. An urgent care whose hours are wrong loses the “open now” search on its busiest day. We keep them current and point the appointment link at your own booking page instead of a third-party directory.

One Profile per Provider, and One for the Practice

Google's guidelines for practices with several clinicians: the practice gets its own profile, and each public-facing provider gets one named for the provider alone. Unmanaged, those profiles split the reviews and compete for the same search.

We give the practice profile the categories, hours, and review flow, set each provider profile to that provider's specialty, and point all of them at the same site. A solo physician shares one profile with the practice.

Review Requests That Respect the Patient

Reviews are the prominence signal a clinic can build fastest, and a clinic has a duty other businesses do not: nothing about a visit is ever mentioned in public.

So the request goes out by text after the visit, and the reply never confirms the visit, names a condition, or argues. “Thank you for taking the time to write this” is a complete reply, and we write that wording for your front desk.

Matching Listings Across Healthgrades, Vitals, Zocdoc, WebMD, and the Payer Directories

Google checks that your name, address, and phone read the same everywhere it finds you, and a medical practice has more places to be wrong than any other business. Healthgrades, Vitals, Zocdoc, WebMD, and every insurer's provider directory were seeded from old credentialing data. We claim what you can control, correct the rest, and bring every listing into line with the profile.

Asymmetric Health is a physician-led Direct Primary Care clinic specializing in TRT, GLP-1-assisted medical weight loss, and BHRT in Lacey, WA. We rebuilt its site in April 2026, built out the profile, matched its listings, and wrote an Olympia page. Our local SEO process for medical clinics

How the Local SEO Work Runs, From Profile to Map Pack

  1. Market Analysis and Your Free SEO Report

We pull the near-me searches for your specialty and city, see whose profiles hold the map pack for each and why, and send you a plain recommendation before you commit to anything.

  2. Claim, Verify, and Build Out the Profile

You add us as a manager on the profile you own. Then categories, the service catalog, attributes, hours, the appointment link, and photos of the real clinic and clinicians, with nothing left on a default.

  3. Bring Every Listing Into Line

Healthgrades, Vitals, Zocdoc, WebMD, the payer directories, and the data aggregators that feed them, all corrected to match the profile's name, address, and phone.

  4. Start the Review Cadence and Set the Reply Rules

A post-visit request your front desk can send in ten seconds, sent to every patient rather than only the happy ones, reply wording that never touches a patient's care, and a steady pace instead of a one-time push.

  5. Write the Town Pages That Back the Profile

One real page for each town you draw from, in that town's own words and linked from the profile, so distance is not the only thing deciding whether you show on the map.

  6. Report on Calls, Directions, and Inquiries Every Month

Profile calls, direction requests, and website clicks from Google, plus inquiries by date and source.

Local SEO for medical clinics questions

Questions Clinic Owners Ask About Local SEO and Google Business Profiles

It depends on three things: what you treat, how many locations you run, and how contested your market is. Ranking one clinic in Camas, WA is a different job from ranking a practice across King County, so we do not publish a rate card. The free SEO report is how we scope it, and you get a written quote before anything starts. One monthly fee then covers the whole program; the website build and Google Ads spend are the only separate lines.

Profile work is the fastest-moving part of SEO. In our engagements, a thin or wrong profile usually starts moving in four to eight weeks once the categories, services, hours, and listings are fixed and reviews start arriving. Asymmetric Health was top-ranked for its priority searches 2 months after its rebuilt site went live. Contested markets take longer, and the free SEO report tells you which kind yours is.

If the practice has several public-facing clinicians, yes. Google's guidelines call for one profile for the practice and one for each practitioner, named for the practitioner alone. If one physician is the whole practice, Google prefers a single shared profile. Either way, the profiles have to agree on address, phone, hours, and categories, or they compete with each other for the same search.

Briefly, warmly, and without a word about the reviewer's care: a reply never confirms the visit, never names a condition or treatment, and never corrects the patient's version of events in public. A short thank-you is a complete reply. We write that wording for your front desk and keep it consistent.

Because it has had a complete profile at every location for years, a long review history, listings kept current by a team, and links from a very large website. Nothing in Google's formula favors hospitals; it is the same three factors, relevance, distance, and prominence, built out at scale. An independent clinic catches up on relevance and prominence in its own neighborhood, and distance favors whoever is closest to the searcher.

One invoice covers local SEO, the organic condition and treatment pages, AI search work, review generation, monthly content, and inquiry reporting. Bought separately, those are six invoices from six vendors who each point at the other when the phone goes quiet. The map pack, the organic listing, and the AI answer are won by the same profile, pages, and schema, so we run them as one program.
